HQ Batkite Review
Posted by Unknown on 11th Oct 2014
The HQ Batkite comes with its own sleeve, which is well made and designed to last pretty much forever, in which the kite was neatly packed. Inserted in a pocket of the sleeve was a very ipressive, well written and easy to understand mutli-lingual instruction booklet describing everything a kiter needs to know, from safety, to how to set up the various kites in the HQ line-up, with the aid of many fine photos. This pocket is adequate enough to hold a set of lines on a winder.
Inspecting the kite, it became obvious that this is a well made kite. I'd rate its construction and design very high, which is impressive considering this is a relatively inexpensive kite, though it does not come with flying lines. Yet still a bargain.
Following the instructions, it was quickly and easily set up for flying. Out to the field for flight in 20 -25 mph; 32 -40 km/h; 4.9 -5.6 Bft, at the beginning of the day, to about 7 mph; 11 km/h; 2.4 Bft later n the day. Once your flying straps are secure on your wrists and you are ready to fly, snap the lines back quickly to launch the kite. You may need to take a step back while doing this as this kite does not launch as easily as most other stunt kites. This motion will need to be more exaggerated in lighter winds.
After launch this kite will take off very fast. This kite is extremely responsive to slight controlled pulls of the lines. Once I got used to its speed and dexterity in heavy wind, which didn't take long, it became much easier to control its flight path. This kite has a respectable pull, even in moderate winds. It was designed for speed and thrives in the power zone of the wind window and demands your complete attention at all times. It gets unstable toward the edge fo the wind window and will have a tendency to stall there. However, if flown within its still large power zone, flying this kite is easy. Its stall tendency at the edge of the wind window can be looked upon as an attribute when landing the kite, even in high winds, as landing is done extremely easily and safely.
Crashing this high-speed kite is inevitable, as I did several times quite hard. Surprisingly, the kite held up perfectly. When hitting the ground, the stand-offs popped out and the lower spreader dislodged at the "T" connector, but, better this happening than parts snapping.
HQ describes this kite as having a usable wind range of between 5 - 38 mph; 7 -61 km/h; 1.5 -7 Bft, however in the lower wind range the kite becomes unstable and more challenging to fly requireing much more skill to get it to do what you want. However for a high speed kite, it is still capable of performng several tricks in the lower wind range, which was an unexpected bonus. Though let me be quite clear on this point, its repertoire is limited in this category.
This is one extremely exciting kite and one I'll go to as often as I get a chance.
My rating between 0 -10, 10 being the best.
